"I need the advice of a roping sage." posted on: Friday, January 15, 2010 by: LqRoper

Im a 16 year old guy wanting to rope. I dont have a horse, tack, land, etc. I have squat. My dads in the Air Force and we will soon be moving to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. I cant find any place there that ropes. Any ideas of where to find stuff? I honestly have no idea where to look. Im a little nervous though because I cant rope unless I have a horse and Im nervous also because I have no idea what Im doing! Any suggestions on how to get started? How to join a rodeo? How it all works? I am willing to listen and learn. I live in New Braunfels, Tx and am also looking for a job that has to do with these interests. Any ideas? Im a christian, homeschooler looking for something to do. Help is greatly appreciated!

"Coming out of the Box" posted on: Thursday, July 23, 2009 by: JT

When coming out of the head box, my weight shifts back in the saddle causing me to have to regain position after my horse takes a couple of strides. What is the best way to secure myself in the saddle coming out of the box to give myself a quicker shot at the steer. My horse comes out flat and straight, the problem is me.

"Crooked Stirrups" posted on: Monday, April 27, 2009 by: Ladyroper

I have ridden with crooked stirrups for several years now and love them. While my knees are not bad (yet) one of them did hurt when riding and for awhile afterwards when I was using regular stirrups. I've never had any knee discomfort since switching to the crooked ones. When you first try them you might think "what's the big deal"? Use them for a couple of weeks and then go back to regular stirrups and you will immediatley feel the difference.

I'm sixty two, and am geeting back into roping after twenty years away from it. During that time I've had one knee replaced and several surgeries on the other. I also have some hip issues. I have heard some people say that the Crooked Stirrups can offer significant relief. I have also heard some people say that they do not help, and are just a fad. I would sure appreciate hearing from anyone who has used them, pro or con.

I'm 55 and my shoulder has started to bother me. I have been taking glucosamine/chondritin/MSM along with calcium. That seems to help especially when it's cold.

I am 73 years old and my knees, elbows, shoulders, give me fits, but I'm still on this side of the dirt, so I will keep roping. A lot of you are in a position to make recommendations as to supplements I might take short of bute..I take about 3 Ibuprofen before and after I rope and that seems to help, I have some braces but only use one on my roping arm. Any suggestions?

I used to use the Professional's Choice knee brace. I liked it while I was using it. My knee has improved since. So I don't use one anymore.

I work in surgery with several ortho docs. Listen to your Drs. they will give you your options. They are many. Total knee replacements have had great success. Many of the pts. I have seen later say it was the best thing they ever did. The newer knee components leave you in better shape then your original knee ever did! Bionic so to speak with better lateral and sideway movement. Check out your options, but don't be afraid to go for it.

"Can you help a girl out?" posted on: Thursday, November 22, 2001 by: davee

Hey people-
This may be a strange request, but three of my college girlfriends and I are going to be in the Montana area over Spring Break. Coming from a small town we haven't been to many big rodeo or roping events. And we were wondering of anyone out there knew of anything that would be worth checking out. We will be near Bozeman during the 9th-17th of March and would love to see some cute cowboys do their thing. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for any information that you might have.

"Total knee " posted on: Tuesday, July 31, 2001 by: Spin Doctor

well coming from a 33 year old, I am not sure if this helps. I had five scopes and then the total knee replacement surgery. I tore the ACL and had to have it replaced. I just get fits when bad weather rolls in.. other than that I wish I could blame my leg for some of the bad shots I have taken. I would suggest take your time.. heal up good and see how it feels.

I know several old ropers who have had knees replaced and I think they probably rope better now than before. I also know several who have had hip replacement and are roping up a storm, so don't even think about letting it slow you down or stop you by any means, just cut us young folk a little slack in the arena and let us win a little.

In numbers I am 60, I don't feel like it anymore since I had surgery on one of my knees. I intend to teamrope alittle this summer with family and friends. I refuse to let numbers change my life before I am ready!

I work for an orthopedic surgeon who replaces knees. One of our patients was a lady in her sixties who was in a rush to get back to barrell racing after her operation. As far as I know she did fine. I'm not sure how this relates to team roping though.
