"Rope break in Suttons" posted on: Friday, January 17, 2003 by: JB

I recently have tried the new "orange" sutton rope not sure of the name but as a med. It feels like almost a scant, very tightly wound. It is like a med soft or something.. It feels right before break in to me.. Anyone tried this rope yet.???

Yep it was the December 2002 Super Looper, an article on pages 18-19 by Rickey Green.

Said that you should put a head rope on a round post with the honda pointing left with the rope pulling thru the honda at the center of the post. HEEL ropes should have the loop upside down with the honda facing right and the rope pulling thru the honda at the center of the post.

Then uncoil the rope and lean back and stretch against it, letting it spin in your hand. Stretch 3-4 times against the tail of the rope, then wrap the rope around your waist and lean into it once or twice. Since the rope can't spin around your waist, go back and get a couple more tail stretches letting it spin naturally.

Then, he says that recoiling the rope is very important. Take your rope and lay it out straight; turn your loop back toward the rest of the rope with the loop in your right hand; with your left hand, coil the rope letting it twist and turn naturally so that it makes smooth coils as you wind it up. Don't force it into a coil without letting it spin. Everytime you build your loop you should trap your honda in your left hand at the top of your coils and slide your right hand down from the honda to your spoke length to keep the honda straight.

I don't know if his website mentions this - there are good photos in the magazine article - but try www.RickeyGreen.com. The info was taken out of his Power Team Roping Methods 1&2 videos.

I also have problems sometime with breaking in ropes. I don't like a true med when their new but a med soft is to soft. How can I break in those med's a little faster than just roping with them in the practice pen.. To stretch them I put the eye on a piece of sucker rod that closes one of the pens and then just pull the hell of it but this doesn't get it done fast enough. I wear out a rope every two weeks and I need a better way sometimes I will use my head horse and dally right by the end of the rope and use him to pull so that it gets more pressure. Any Ideas will help.

It was an article by Rickey Green in the December (I think) issue of the Super Looper. If not December then November or January. You might be able to find it on his web site.

I saw an article somewhere (internet or print?) and now I can't find it. it was about stretching and breaking in head and heel ropes. It made a great deal of sense after I read it but I want to find it again to print it out. It said that you should put the honda end around a post and stretch it by hand (not on your horse dallied up) so the rope can roll as you stretch it. It also said something about doing a heel rope different than a head rope. If anyone has seen this or has any tips, let me know
