The fifth annual Cimarron NRS Team Roping Classic (NRSTRC) was held April 10-12, 2015. The NRSTRC paid out over $550,000 in cash and prizes, including two Chevy Dually pick-up trucks from James Wood Motors, two three-horse Cimarron bumper-pull trailers, two custom NRS Pro Series saddles and much more. The NRSTRC gives the lower numbered team roper a chance to win big prizes like the professionals. The #11 roping was capped at a #6 Elite this year, and ropers could enter up to three times.

Ropers started rolling in and hooking up their trailers on Thursday night to get a good night’s rest before the first full round on Friday. The top 75 teams from Friday and Saturday’s rounds (rounds one and two) came back to Sunday’s non-progressive final three rounds.

The preliminary rounds paid out close to $12,000 each. Friday’s round winners were Travis Meyer, from Three Rivers, Texas, and Case Swaim, from Jourdanton, Texas. They made a 7.67 on their first steer and took home $5,178 to split.  The times got a little faster for the second round, held on Saturday. Hamish Harley from Paris, Texas, and Shane McCall, from Berryville, Arkansas, made a 6.61 on their steer, which got them $5,178 to split.

The top 75 teams from the first two rounds came back on Sunday for their jackets and a chance to win the big jackpot. The teams started clean on Sunday and had three full rounds. The best average time brought home the matching trucks, trailers and the winning check. The reserve champions received custom-fitted NRS Pro Series saddles along with a sizeable check.

With a total time of 24.48 seconds on three head, Jorge Marrufo and Alan Pena of Chihuahua, Mexico, took home the brand-new rigs and $21,576 each. Each rig consisted of a silver 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD  LT 6.6 Duramax Diesel Truck, valued at $52,785; and a matching 2015 Cimarron 3-Horse Bumper Pull Trailer with mangers, front and rear tack rooms, 6’ hay rack/ladder, aluminum wheels, drop down feed doors, L.E.D. lights and more.  Both rigs had custom graphics identifying the winners as the Champion Header and Champion Heeler of the 2015 NRS Team Roping Classic.

“This is by far the most money I’ve ever won,” Pena said, “it is definitely a very emotional win.”  Marrufo and Pena had met at local jackpots, and each have been roping for less than 3 years. Marrufo is married and has three children who are all very excited to see their dad make such a great win. “I made up my mind to win this roping and I did what I needed to make it happen,” Marrufo stated. This pair are living proof that the sport of team roping is alive and well in countries around the world.

With a three-head time of 25.71, Billy McCall and Shane McCall from Berryville, Arkansas came in second for $19,419 each and two NRS Pro Series Saddles. These saddles were custom fitted to the McCalls’ horses and preferred seat size. Sam Jackson and Jim Allred took home another check for third place, totaling $34,523.

Other prize winners received Mortenson Trophy Buckles, NRSTRC jackets, $100 gift card to NRS and cash! There was also a $10,000 side pot for the three high-point NRSTRC Alumni ropers.

With the great turnout and amazing sponsors including Cimarron Trailers, National Roper’s Supply and NRS Trailers, Cinch Jeans, James Wood Motors, Resistol Hats, Classic Ropes, Sweetie Pies Ribeyes and Mortenson Trophy Buckles, the payout and prizes were exceptional. Next year’s roping is already in the books for April 8-10, 2016. Stay tuned to NRSworld.com to find out when the books will open for the 6th Annual NRS Team Roping Classic!
