6/25 Drew Horner: Uncoiled. Preparing for the summer run

photo 4 For the past few weeks, I have been preparing for the summer run. Well, now we are here. We went to two rodeos on the way to the Bob Feist Invitational (BFI); Santa Fe New Mexico, and Pleasant Grove Utah. We didn’t win anything at Santa Fe but we won 4th in the first round and 4th in the average at Pleasant Grove.

photo 1     The BFI didn’t go so well for me either. I didn’t really rope too well. We were clean on our first one. Then I ended up jerking the second steer down – something I’ve been struggling with a little lately is having a soft handle. The steer got up and buddy roped a leg. Still had a chance at winning some money because this roping is usually tough to win but easy to place and get good money out of it. I ended up missing the third steer. The next two steers were go round attempts, and I turned both of ’em fast but not very soft. Buddy didn’t get a clean heel shot at them. We didn’t win any money at the BFI.
We have a slow week this week since the only two rodeos we are going to are Reno, Nevada and Pecos, Texas. We have been staying at Jade Corkill’s place in Fallon Nevada, about an hour away from Reno. It’s been really good to be there and practice, and to also put our horses in big pens and let them relax a little bit this week. It’s always good to have good friends on the road that will open their doors to you and let you stay, and essentially, live at their place for a little while. He has a great family, and Buddy and I really appreciate what they are doing for us. As I have said before, if you want to be a winner then surround yourself by winners. This goes for anything, if you want to have good practice and good relationships, find the people that are good ropers and also people of good integrity.
 Until next time. DH
