7/2 Drew Horner: Uncoiled. 4th of July week start

The start to the summer has been up and down. We went to a few rodeos on our way to Reno. I talked about Reno last week, the smaller steers and my new strategy. We were 5.4 on our first steer for $2,100. Our next steer was 5.7. We ended up coming back to the short – round 4th call back. We were 11.1 on two and drew a decent steer. He left the gates and then started veering left. I got him, and Buddy came around and roped two feet. He kind of bobbled his dally a little and hurt us a tick, but we were 6.1. We were second in the average at the time. Wasn’t the best run, wish we could have been leading it at the time. We end up winning 4th in the average in the end.

We came out of Reno winning about $6,500, which is a great. It helps us break that $40,000 mark for the year. We have a good opportunity to keep going for the rest of the summer. Reno was a good start for July and the rest of the summer.

Going into the 4th of July week, I haven’t roped worth a flip. I’ve roped terrible actually. I missed the first three steers at the 10 rodeos we go to this week. Which is not good. But it is OK. The last three rodeos that I’ve missed at have been smaller one-headers. We didn’t draw the greatest at two of them. This all makes it easier to get over. Although, today… I can’t believe I did this. I missed this steer so badly. I probably missed him by 3 or 4 feet. It was really bad. It was all kind of embarrassing.

We’re headed over to Oakley City, UT tonight, so hopefully we’ll buckle down and get one caught clean and get paid on this steer.

Although Reno was a great start to the summer, we have not had a great start to this week – the week of 4th of July, Cowboy Christmas, as they call it. We have 7 more rodeos this week to turn it around. But we’ll see how it goes… DH
