7/25 Drew Horner: Uncoiled. Keeping my priorities straight.

Rodeoing is a lot of fun. There are plenty of positives about being out here on the road, especially as a young guy. It’s definitely something I really enjoy doing. It does sometimes come with its struggles though.
This year has been my best year I have ever had so far at the pro rodeos, and I have loved it! I thank God all the time for the opportunity to be out here doing something I love. Competition at the highest level, winning and being the best I can be, are a few things that I enjoy doing. Rodeo allows me that opportunity to do it.
This is definitely not a sport for the faint hearted though. It takes tons of mental discipline to be good at it. To win at this level takes more than just roping well and being a good horseman. It takes things that you can’t quite understand until you experience it for yourself. That’s within the competition of a rodeo or jackpot.
I love competing and I love roping, but sometimes it’s a struggle to stay focused. I miss home a lot. Not the typical thing for a younger guy to say, but I really do. I have good friends and a great family at home that I miss all the time. I look forward to being able to see them in the future. Being out here isn’t that easy. For me, I love roping and competing, but I hate being gone all the time, but it’s just part of the game.
There is one person at home that I miss all the time, and that’s my girlfriend, Liz Larsen. She has been a huge part of my life this past year, and I think about her all the time. She motivates and encourages me to do the best I can, no matter what. Although she supports me all the way with my roping, it is still tough to think about the fact that I won’t get to see her for another 4 weeks at least. Being gone away from home is a struggle for me, but I love roping and competing at this level, and that’s a little sacrifice I can make right now.

While I’m gone, one thing I do that keeps me focused and helps me keep my priorities straight, which roping is definitely not my first priority when it comes to my family and her, is keeping my life in line as close as I can to what Christ has in store for me. This means reading the Bible, studying it, and applying it to my life. I have learned that if I take steps to reach towards Christ by reading the Bible, praying, serving people, and doing little things like encouraging others to be the best they can, it seems like my life becomes so much easier. Keeping my focus on my relationship with Jesus Christ helps me keep my priorities straight.
In order to keep my priorities straight, Christ has to be the first priority. He guides me, leads me and puts me in spots that give me chances to have success in my life. All I have to do is trust in him and try to build a relationship with him as if I were trying to build a relationship with anyone else; which consists of talking to him (prayer), reading His writings (Bible), and living a life that is honoring to Him (integrity). By doing these things, my perspective on life opens up. This allows for a more clear vision for decision making in my future and also allows me to always be happy no matter the circumstances. I get sad, I get angry, and I get lonely, but God keeps my perspective clear, and I trust in him to keep my vision clear and focused so that I can choose happiness.  True happiness and true joy is found in a relationship with Christ. Take these steps that I mentioned earlier:
1) pray to Jesus Christ
2) read the Bible to understand Him and His life and what He wants you to do with your life
3) trust in Him
photoAnd you will too find happiness.
Start reading the Book of John in the Bible then go on to the Book of Romans. You will read about Jesus’s life and his story in the book of John, and Romans will help guide you to start taking steps in the right direction to trusting God and understanding what He wants you to do with your life. Here are the links to the first chapters of these two books so you can read them online.  You can go from chapter to chapter as you read. Just read a chapter a day which should only take about 5 mins a day.
John is 21 chapters, so 21 days for 5 mins a day roughly.
Romans is 16 chapters, so 16 days for 5 mins a day roughly. Easy reading I promise. I copied an easy to read version here so no Thees and thous, or shalts and shalt nots, it’s easy English!

We got some new stuff comin up that I’m really excited about. Gonna talk a little bit more in depth of the stepping stones of pro rodeo and how I got to where I am at, what it takes to be a professional team roper and the different ways to be a professional team roper at a top level. I am going to explain the tiers of rodeo inside the PRCA so you guys can hopefully understand what rodeo is like trying to move up through the ranks from amateur riding to circuit rodeoing to full-time rodeoing on the pro tour. It’ll be a series over the next couple weeks, so keep comin’ back and pay attention to my fan page to see the updates for my blogs and to learn more about rodeo and Roping out here.
You can follow me and watch videos of my runs and also other short video updates if you go like my Facebook fan page and follow me on twitter.
Feel free to leave comments or ask questions, I’ll get back with you in between runs.
