8/2 Drew Horner: Uncoiled. Rope of Choice.

Something I think about quite a bit with my roping is the rope that I use and why. It boils down to a few things for me; feel and consistency in having good fresh ropes every time I pull it out of my rope bag, and having ropes I can count on no matter what the weather is. That’s why I use Rattler Ropes. I have been through a few ropes over the past couple years that I have really liked and stuck with. I rarely change something I can win with unless I think I can win with it right away.

Another rope I used a few years ago was the Classic Heat. A great rope! Especially for your every day jackpot roper! It’s a great rope for any type of weather, and lasts so long that you definitely get your moneys worth. Classic and Rattler make awesome and consistent ropes day in and day out. They have provided me with great ropes for the past few years and I feel comfortable and confident to win with any rope I get from them.

The rope of choice I like now is the Rattler GT4. I am going to compare the two ropes I have used the most the past few years, the Classic Heat versus the Rattler GT4, and give y’all a little perspective as to why I use what I.

One thing I look for in the feel of my ropes is the body. The GT4 has a little bit more body to it than the Heat does. They both have great bodies, but for my style of roping, I need a little bit more body to my rope. The speed of my rope is a crucial aspect to consider.

The Heat feels like a faster rope, but when the GT4 hits the horns, it feels like it just sticks to the horns and burns shut. The Heat has a little more of a tendency to snap shut faster than the GT4, but the GT4 has more of a mold feeling to it when it goes on. The GT4 feels a little more like a 3-strand rope than the Heat does. Both ropes are 4 strands with a core, but the spacing between the GT4’s strands give it that 3-strand feel in your hand. I like the way both ropes feel in my hand, but nowadays, I prefer the “grippier” feel in my fingers.

Both of these ropes have been great to me in all kinds of weather. One of the reasons Classic and Rattler ropes do so well in different weather conditions is because of their core. The core helps keep stability in the rope, especially in extremely hot weather. It’s all about how you take care of them and prepare them for where you are going. There are things I do with my ropes in order to keep them the way I like them for different parts of the country and different weather conditions, but Classic does things that other companies don’t necessarily do that separates them, and makes them a leader in quality ropes.

The core also helps the ropes longevity and its shape. The shape of my coils and my loop stay straighter, without any kinks messing my swing or delivery up. That keeps my confidence in my ropes. One thing I really like about Classic and Rattler is their ability to make and develop anything. They can take an idea, produce it, and put it to the test. They are one of two rope companies that make their own raw material. This gives them the freedom to make high quality ropes the way they want. Being able to make a rope from scratch helps the consistency in their product. When I get a box of ropes from them, every rope feels just as good as the next one.

Bigger coils I keep my ropes like this when I’m not using them.

Rarely do I ever have a rope that I don’t feel comfortable with. These are reasons why I like these two ropes; the Heat and the GT4. Some things I do in order to keep my ropes feeling just right is to keep them coiled up in bigger coils then I use to rope with them. This keeps them a little bit stiffer for me and I like that harder feel. I keep them in “perfect circle” coils so I don’t get any kinks in my loop. Keeping them coiled up big and in good circles helps keep my ropes true. I have used the Heat a lot and I have used the GT4 a lot. I like both ropes. Both ropes are fast, both ropes are extremely consistent, and both ropes are great feeling, trustworthy ropes. They both stay open and have great durability within its coils, loop, and core design. It all boils down now to feel; which rope do you like in your hand. That’s it! It’s nothing special. The only thing that matters is as long as you have a quality rope in your hand that you can trust and you know will help you win, that’s it! Quality and consistency in a product is important, and Classic and Rattler are able to provide that the best. Find a rope that feels good to you and go with it!

Smaller coil size I use when I’m roping.
