9/9 Drew Horner: Uncoiled. New Head Horse

0

So… I bought a new horse the other day and I am REALLY excited about him! He is proven and solid. He has already become my first string horse. I haven’t figured out a name for him yet, but I’m sure we will get something figured out soon. Anyway, I haven’t gotten a new horse in awhile, so this kind of got me thinking about what I like to look for in a head horse.

When I think about head horses, I think about different places I’ll be using them, mainly the rodeos and the jackpots. I have learned the different qualities I like in horses for both situations. A few components I want in both situations though are speed, agility, quickness, athleticism, and the ability for the horse to “listen” to me. These characteristics are crucial in good head horses. Every one of the best head horses out here have these qualities in them. I was particularly looking for a rodeo horse, so when I tried this horse, I wanted to be able to reach and still ride him easy enough to handle well on him. This horse is proven. Kaleb Driggers owned him before me and he is known for his reaching ability. Just seeing what Kaleb has done on this horse was enough evidence that this horse was capable of being reached on day after day. My new horse is fast. Speed is an essential part of a head horse in any situation. You have to get there first before you can rope. Agility in a head horse is necessary in facing strong and finishing a run. Quickness for head horses helps with your reaction time. When you react to the steer, your hose reacts to the steer. Also, for firing across the line to give you the best start you can get. Overall athleticism and the ability to listen are vital. A broke horse that can move fast and smooth however he wants all while doing everything that you tell him to do makes roping easy. Its fun to get on a horse and have that kind of power underneath you in your control. Roping without good horses is like donating your money to everyone else. If you want to win, invest in a good horse. Whatever your level is, having a good horse will make roping more fun and easier to win.
